Instagram adds special features for Pride Month!
In celebration of Pride Month Instagram has added new features in an attempt to allow a more accepting and open community. As the first feature Instagram has adjusted its gender options. Where before Instagram users could choose between “male”, “female” and “not specified”, now users can select “male”,”female”, “prefer not to say”, or enter the gender they most identify with in a “custom” entry field.
Additionally to this, Instagram has added Rainbow effect to their story and hashtag feature. Instagram has partnered with American LGBT+ organisation GLAAD and have identified some of the most popular hashtags used by the LGBT+ community. These include the hashtags #lgbt, #bornperfect and #transequalitynow. When used in captions and comments the hashtags will be transformed into a rainbow gradient. When used in a story, the “story ring” will appear rainbow as well.
Some custom camera effects have also been added to the app in celebration of Pride. Instagram is also planning on adding special features of important and inspiring members of LGBT+ community in their own official account. These features will include transgender actor, director and writer Jake Graff, award winning youth worker Tanya Compas and DJ and transgender activist Munroe Bergdorf.
