I know what you must be thinking reading this title: “WHAT WHY?”. Well no need to freak out completely just yet: Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger will remain standalone apps.

Mark Zuckerberg, the brain behind Facebook (as we all know), and the owner of Instagram since 2012, has devised a new plan to combine the underlying technical infrastructures of the apps. This allows Zuckerberg to assert his control over the company’s sprawling divisions at a time when its business has been battered by scandal.

The apps will remain individual only its infrastructure will be unified according to 4 people involved in the effort. This would allow, not only to bring together three of the largest messaging networks in the world, but would allow its 2.6 Billion users to communicate across the platforms for the first time.

New York Time journalist Mike Isaac theorizes that this change would have the potential to redefine how billions of people use the apps separately to connect with one another whilst also strengthening Facebook’s grip on its users. This would multiply the antitrust, privacy and security questions that have been stalking Facebook since Zuckerberg’s promises were put into question in the 2010s.

The platform plans to integrate the platforms messaging platforms at the end of 2019 or early 2020. The change is only in its early stages as it requires thousand of Facebook employees to reconfigure how WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger function at their most basic levels.

Additionally to this change, a new messaging app has hit the markets: Direct by Instagram. The standalone instagram messaging app much like Facebook Messenger. Just like Snapchat, it is said that the app opens on the selfie cam and offers a variety of filters to try. This app has been going through its test period since the end of 2017 in Chili, Israel, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, and Uruguay.
