New Social Media laws to protect UK’s Children

Under proposed guidelines to ensure children’s safety online, Facebook, Instagram and other social media companies may have to turn off the like function for young users.


Under these new guidelines, techniques that would nudge youth under 18 to stay online longer, would also be prohibited.


This new code of practice from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s data watchdog, would comprise 16 standards that online services should meet in the United Kingdom. Which would include that settings must be set to high privacy by default and that only the minimum amount of personal data may be collected. Additionally new nudge techniques which would encourage children to turn off privacy techniques or to provide any unnecessary personal data will be restricted.


These new social media guidelines are still being consulted by the ICO and will continue to be until the end of May.

These new guidelines are faced with a wide variety of opinions, some, like children’s charities,  agreeing and welcoming these guidelines whilst others argue that it should be up to parents to keep their children safe online.


Information commissioner Elizabeth Denham claims that we have arrived at the connected generation and that all the wonders of the internet have become hardwired into children’s everyday lives:  “We shouldn’t have to prevent our children from being able to use it, but we must demand that they are protected when they do. This code does that.”
